How to choose an AI voice for short videos

How to pick an AI voice for short videos, match it to the topic and keep a channel sounding consistent.

Voiceover carries most short videos, so the voice you pick shapes how the video feels. Modern AI voices can sound natural, but choosing well still matters.

Match the voice to the topic

  • Facts, history, science: a steady, warm voice, not too fast.
  • Tips and how-tos: clear and friendly, with a lively pace.
  • Humour and commentary: a voice with some energy and variety.
  • Stories and mystery: a lower, slower voice that leaves room for pauses.

Listen to a few lines in each voice, not just the preview. The same voice can sound great on one script and flat on another.

Write for the ear

A script that reads well can sound stiff when spoken. Use short sentences, contractions and everyday words. Avoid long lists and nested clauses. Read the script aloud once. If you stumble, the voice will too.

Control the pace

Natural narration runs at around two words per second including pauses. Faster than that sounds rushed. If the script is too long for the time, cut words rather than speeding up the voice.

Keep one voice per channel

A recognisable channel sounds the same from video to video. Pick one voice and keep it. If you change, change for a reason, such as a new series.

Choose a model for the job

Different models trade off expressiveness, speed and cost. A more expressive model suits stories and commentary. A faster, cheaper model is fine for quick facts and high volume. In Uma, the default is a fast, natural model, and you can open advanced settings to choose another model and a specific voice.

Be honest about what it is

Some platforms ask you to label content made with synthetic voices. Read the current rules for each platform you post on and follow them.

Try it

Create a video with the default voice first. If it fits, keep it. If not, try another in the advanced settings and compare.
